Sol Lewitt Sentences on Conceptual Art pocket tee

Solomon "Sol" LeWitt (1928–2007) was an American artist linked to various movements, including conceptual art and minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960s with his wall drawings and "structures" (a term he preferred instead of "sculptures") but was prolific in a wide range of media including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist's books.

In 1968, Lewitt authored a series of 35 statements (first published in 1969), which offered one of the earlier attempts to define conceptual art. The list begins with the possibly counter-intuitive assertion: "Conceptual Artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to conclusions that logic cannot reach."

This t-shirt reproduces Sol Lewitt's hand-written version of the statements (as archived by the Museum of Modern Art in NYC) on the back. On the front, Sol Lewitt's name appears in all-caps on the shirt's pocket, in a facsimile of Artforum's signature Berthold Akzidenz font. (This particular text did not appear in Artforum, but Lewitt's "Pararagraphs on Conceptual Art" did in 1967).
